Tap – don’t rub:
This is how you get better results from your skincare routine
An effective skincare routine isn’t just about the products you use. How you apply them also matters a lot. It can even enhance their effect.
Have you ever thought about how you apply your skincare products? Most people would probably say no – after all, isn’t it just a matter of rubbing it in and being done?
Then maybe it’s time to reconsider. Because the way you apply your face cream or serum actually makes a difference – something Japanese women have understood for a long time.
What is skincare tapping?
Tapping is something we associate with payments, but it’s also an ancient Japanese technique where the fingertips or palms are used to gently press and pat skincare products into the skin – instead of rubbing, dragging, or smearing.
This has become increasingly common in other parts of the world as well – and for good reason.
Why is this technique good for the skin?
Okay, so it takes a little longer to tap moisturizer into the skin than to just quickly rub it on. So why should you take the time?
Because it’s much gentler on the skin. By tapping in the products, you reduce stretching and friction – and therefore also the risk of irritation, redness, sagging, and fine lines. Many of us rub in products without realizing that the skin, especially on the face, is more sensitive than we think. This is particularly important in areas prone to irritation from rubbing, such as around the eyes or cheeks.
Some also claim that this technique can improve the absorption of products into the skin by increasing blood circulation. In any case, it’s something worth trying – especially if you want to be a little kinder to your skin.
How do you do it?
Here’s how to use the tapping technique with the most common skincare products:
Serum
Facial serums are already concentrated and effective – they don’t need much extra force to work. Gently pat them into the skin with your fingertips for maximum effect and gentle application.
Moisturizer
Do you have dry skin? Then you’re probably willing to try anything that helps the cream absorb better. Now’s your chance. Instead of massaging the moisturizer into the skin (such as the Nordic Recovery Cream), tap it in with your fingertips. Think of it as a few extra minutes of self-care in your daily routine.
Eye cream
If you’re going to try tapping in just one area, make it the area around the eyes. The skin here is especially thin and delicate and doesn’t tolerate rubbing well. Apply the product (such as the Nordic Under Eye Treatment) with the tip of the applicator, then use your ring finger to gently pat it in under the eyes.
Neck cream
The same applies here as with face moisturizers, but try tapping in an upward direction to work against gravity and promote circulation around the jaw and chin. Try this technique when applying the Neck & Chest Refining Cream.
When should you not do it?
There are a few exceptions where you shouldn’t tap. Physical exfoliants and facial cleansers are best massaged into the skin with circular motions – it helps activate the product and remove impurities. But otherwise, feel free to tap away.
Worth trying
We’ve all definitely done it – swiped across the face with quick motions and a slightly too heavy hand, maybe even thinking that the harder, the better. But the truth is, your skin does best when you’re a bit gentler with your application.
So next time you’re going through your skincare routine – try this technique. Tap and pat in the products calmly and mindfully. Your skin will love it.
